Jeep boss, Mike Manley, has confirmed that Jeep will be building a Wrangler based ute.
The Detroit News wrangled the headline from Manley after a press conference at the 2016 Detroit motor show. Manley is a fan of the Wrangler ute idea and believes that there is a historical place in the Jeep lineup for the load lugger.
“Sergio [Marchionne – Fiat Chrysler boss] and I work very, very closely on the Jeep product portfolio, and both of us have been a fan of a potential Wrangler pickup,” he said.
The go anywhere ute will be based on the next-generation Wrangler due in 2017, with the long wheelbase variant of the Wrangler ute expected to debut a year later.
The idea of a Wrangler ute isn’t a new one, with Jeep producing a handful of Wrangler ute concepts over recent years, including the Gladiator pictured above.
Until now, Wrangler owners wanting a ute have had no choice but to either build their own or spend up big on a custom job with the likes of American Expedition Vehicles and their AEV Brute Double-Cab Ute (main image).
The ute variant of the Wrangler will be built in the same Toledo Ohio plant as the regular four-wheel drive models. Roll on 2018!
