The January 2016 sales figures are in and as we’ve previously reported, there is a new sales leader in town, with the Ford Ranger showing the Toyota HiLux a clean pair of heels, if only for a month.
The data also reveals that HiLux clung to the number two position by just 178 sales over Nissan’s NP300 Navara and 189 sales over Holden’s Colorado. The gloves are definitely off in the 4X4 ute segment.
A similar battle rages between the best selling wagons with Toyota’s LandCruiser outselling the Jeep Grand Cherokee by just six units. The Grand Cherokee is well down on sales compared to January 2015 (679 compared to 1008), while the recently updated LandCruiser appears to be on a bit of a roll (up from 530 to 685 sales).
Volkswagen’s Amarok posted a 12 percent improvement when compared to the previous January, up from 500 to 558 sales.
Mitsubishi might be killing off the Pajero, but in the meantime it’s selling up a storm, with sales up from 352 units in January 2015 to 498 units last month. Proof that out-of-date still sells if the price is right.
The Land Rover Defender more than doubled it’s January sales, selling 87 units in 2016. That will be the mad rush of buyers taking delivery of the last Defenders, prior to manufacturing ceasing last week. They’d have been on order for months and we’ll continue to see new Defender sales in the stats for the next month or two.
