The Nissan D40 Navara is the latest vehicle to be recalled due to a known fault with airbags supplied by Takata Corporation.
Announced today, the recall affects as many as 41,373 D40s built in Thailand between 2008 and 2014, specifically those with VIN numbers that range from MNT*C*D40A0000009 to MNT*C*D40A0603279, although it should be noted that not all of the vehicles in the VIN range are necessarily affected.
According to the recall notice, “the propellant tablets in some of the subject inflators may experience an alteration over time, which could potentially lead to over-aggressive combustion in the event of an air bag deployment. Depending on the circumstances, this potential condition could create excessive internal pressure when the air bag is deployed, which could result in the body of the inflator rupturing upon deployment”.
Or in other words an inflating airbag could release shrapnel as the inflator ruptures which may pose a hazard to vehicle occupants.
Owners of D40 Navaras that are within the VIN range noted above will be contacted by Nissan when parts availability is confirmed, and asked to contact their local Nissan Dealer to arrange for replacement of the front passenger airbag inflator. The replacement will be at no cost to owners.
