New 4X4 Sales In March 2016

New 4X4 Sales In March 2016

New 4X4 sales data is in for March 2016 and it’s been a solid month despite the Easter holiday. The top end of the chart (see below) is now looking ‘familiar’ with HiLux, Ranger and Triton continuing to fill the top three positions.

The winners

As expected, sales of the all-new Toyota HiLux have found their stride and the Lux is sitting comfortably at the top of the 4X4 sales chart in March, a position we can probably expect it to hold for the balance of the year, barring any supply issues.

The big mover is the Isuzu D-Max which jumped from 8th place to 5th place on the back of 1262 sales in March, up from 841 sales in January.

The losers

Nissan Navara sales have hit a wall. Despite being a new generation platform released just last year, it’s sales figures are trending down month on month this year and aren’t even close to the sales achieved in the previous year.

Jeep appears to be suffering a similar fate, with sales of most of it’s models taking a pounding, in-particular the Grand Cherokee and Cherokee models. Cherokee is down 820 sales when compared to the same period last year, while Grand Cherokee sales have almost halved.

We’ve contacted Jeep Australia for comment on this reversal of fortune. Some media outlets are blaming quality and reliability issues, while others are suggesting exchange rate pressures. We’ll update this article with any official response we receive.

The final tally

Overall, there were 20,569 new 4X4s sold in Australia in March this year. That’s almost line-ball with the 20,499 4X4 sales achieved in March 2015 and remains a significant chunk of the 104,512 new vehicle sales in March.

One in five new vehicles sold in Australia is a 4X4.
