Chris had to sell his beloved single cab Lux when the kids arrived. His solution? Buy the same model in a dual-cab.
Why did you choose this particular 4X4?
I always loved this model HiLux. I previously had the same model in a single cab which I bought new, only sold it when kids came along.
I decided to look for the same model in a dual cab because it’s tough, has great ground clearance (even standard) and drives more like a truck than a car, which I like.
Aftermarket support is second to none and it’s simple to do the vast majority of maintenance myself in the garage.
What have you built this 4X4 to do?
When I purchased this HiLux it had the ARB bull bar, side rails and rear bar as well as the Warn winch, IPF Lights and Rancho suspension.
It was pretty well setup for the off-road side of things but I added a few items (mainly for the touring side of things) like a UHF, a lockable hardcover, a decent stereo, an awning and extra power and USB outlets inside.
It is used for towing our camper trailer as well, which it handle no worries.
Where have you taken it and what are some of your favourite tracks/destinations?
One of my favorite places is Cocaparra National Park. It is about 35kms from home and I go out there with my sons for day trips to visit some of the tracks and have a picnic.
There are some pretty decent tracks in the area, some of which can become really challenging after rain, with deep ruts full of mud and water. I have had water half way up the doors on occasion.
Unfortunately the past few years I’ve not been able to do any big trips as I’ve been fighting cancer but I’m doing well now and planning a trip up the Strezlecki track and to Cameron’s corner.
Would you set it up the same again and if not, what would you change?
I don’t think I would change much, maybe update the head unit for one with Bluetooth. I’d also consider swapping out the hardcover for a mesh canopy with canvas cover.
What future mods do you have planned?
Dual batteries is going to be the next addition, and I have some Ironman rear helper springs to add to help with the towing duties. Also an Anderson plug connection to charge the camper battery and accept solar charging as well. Extended diff/transfer/gearbox breathers when I get time, and a freer flowing exhaust when funds allow as well.
I’m also considering a mounting system for my Maxtrax to mount off the roof basket.
Is there anyone that you’d like to thank for their help/assistance with building your 4X4?
Just my wife for being so supportive.
