Matty’s trick GQ shorty custom has been built to handle the tough tracks…and mud…lots of mud.
Why did you choose this particular 4X4?
What attracted me to this ute was the fact that it’s one of a kind. It’s a custom rig that has the ‘wow’ factor – it turns heads everywhere I go.
What have you built this 4X4 to do?
It has been specifically built for off-road purposes and to be able to handle the harder tracks. Originally it was a SWB Wagon, but it’s been re-engineered into a ute, which involved a cab chop and installing a tray.
Where have you taken it and what are some of your favourite tracks/destinations?
I only bought the Patrol this year and so far I’ve taken it to the Wombat and Lerderderg State Forests. I have plans to take it up to the Victorian High Country soon.
Would you set it up the same again and if not, what would you change?
No, I wouldn’t change the basics of the build much at all, it all works and is just how I want it but I do have some mods planned for the future, including a bit more power.
What future mods do you have planned?
I’m definitely considering adding a rear air locker, changing the diffs over to 4:6s, fitting a sub-tank for a bit more range and a high mount winch. I’m also looking closely at a 5.0 litre V8 engine conversion.
Is there anyone that you’d like to thank for their help/assistance with building your 4X4?
A special shout out to Simon Dangerfield from Complete Maintenance Services in Bacchus Marsh, and the Ballarat Rednecks 4×4 Group!
