Steve is a passionate Patrol man. As far as he’s concerned the Patrol is the only 4X4 that’s tough enough to take on Australia’s rugged tracks day in and day out, without the owner needing shares in a workshop.
Steve has spent plenty of time touring in his Y61 Patrol but also admits that he likes to get off-road and into the “rough stuff” whenever possible.
With this in mind he’s set about modifying his Patrol, to make it even more more capable and a little bit quicker off the mark as well.
The Patrol’s 3.0-litre CRD engine has been fitted with a Steinbauer chip, a larger HPD intercooler, along with a 3.25″ exhaust with a fabricated dump pipe.
The original dual-mass flywheel and factory clutch has been replaced with a one-piece flywheel and an Xtreme Outback heavy duty clutch kit.
The rest of the Patrol’s drivetrain is about as tough as they come and Steve has left it stock, choosing instead to upgrade the suspension.
A lift was on the wish-list, and Steve achieved that with a set of 3″ Dobinson springs. He’s also fitted 3 degree offset bushes to the front radius arms, and adjustable Panhard rods.
Steve is currently running BF Goodrich All-Terrain tyres on 16″ Sunraysia steel rims.
Bar work consists of a steel bull bar fitted with a 12,000lb electric winch.
The Patrol has plenty of room for touring kit, and Steve’s upped the ante further by fitting a drawer unit in the rear, along with a 47-litre Waeco fridge, to keep the beer and steaks cold.
Steve’s Patrol is his idea of the perfect off-roader and touring machine. Some manufacturers might claim their 4X4s are unbreakable, but Steve believes only one 4X4 actually is.
