The Nissan Navara EnGuard concept has been unveiled at Germany’s IAA Commercial Vehicle motor show in Hannover Germany.

Based on the NP300 Navara, Nissan’s designers have turned the dual-cab ute into an emergency and disaster recovery vehicle with a portable battery pack designed and developed by Nissan.

2016 Navara EnGuard Concept 003When docked in place the battery packs are in ‘charge’ mode, using power generated by the Navara’s 2.3-litre turbo diesel engine. Each pack is a 2kW unit and utilises seven Nissan EV battery modules inside a weather-proof aluminium housing.

In a rescue environment the battery packs could be used to operate cutting or heavy-lifting equipment, and have been specifically designed to provide an efficient alternative to a petrol generator and one that would be safer to use in certain situations.

2016 Navara EnGuard Concept 002The remainder of the EnGuard’s ute tray is taken up with two pull-out fibreglass trays, designed to carry communication and rescue equipment.

And yes, that is a drone you can see in the images, specifically a DJI Phantom 4 drone with an operating ceiling of 6,000 metres, a maximum speed of 20 metres per second and flight time of close to 30 minutes. Video recorded by the drone can be viewed on a pop-up HD screen that tucks away neatly in the load bed wall.

2016 Navara EnGuard Concept 004The Navara EnGuard Concept sits 50mm higher than the standard Navara, thanks to an adjustable performance suspension system that includes upgraded nylon bushes.

The wheel arches feature ‘bespoke overfenders’ or what we’d call flares and Nissan has added an additional 136mm of height to the Navara’s roofline. There’s also a 360 degree LED lighting rig, with emergency blue strobe lights fitted to the four corners and visible from any angle.

2016 Navara EnGuard Concept 006Philippe Guerin-Boutaud, Corporate Vice President, Light Commercial Vehicles, Nissan, commented: “The Nissan Navara is a tough and smart pick-up which our customers rely on to go anywhere and do anything in their daily lives. The Nissan Navara EnGuard Concept is an extension of that principle, showcasing how our award-winning pick-up is perfectly suited to tackle the toughest terrain and save lives.”

“The Navara EnGuard Concept opens a new chapter in the Nissan Intelligent Mobility vision, featuring our commitment to zero fatalities and zero emissions. Our prototype EV portable battery pack reveals how Nissan will integrate its world-renowned EV battery technology and expertise into new sectors in the future.”
