Pam and Nic knew that a regular ute wasn’t going to meet their specific requirements for a remote area tourer and tug. They needed more: more room, more payload, more towing capacity and more wheels!

This incredible Isuzu D-MAX six-wheeler is the result.

The project brief was to create a self-contained touring vehicle that was capable of safely towing Nic and Pam’s 3-tonne Jayco Sterling Caravan. When unhooked from the van, the D-MAX needed to retain it’s off-road ability and be able to confidently tackle remote area 4WD tracks.

The D-MAX’s reputation for reliability made it the preferred choice of donor vehicle and a brand new D-MAX was trucked up to Sixwheeler Conversion’s Toowoomba based workshop in December 2015, to undergo the conversion.

The work was completed in late January 2016 and the re-engineered D-MAX was shipped back to Adelaide’s Wayne Phillis Isuzu UTE in early February.

The rear body was then manufactured by Jackson’s Carry Me Camper in Murray Bridge, South Australia and is now fitted out with all of the gear required to spend time safely in remote areas.

Since building their D-MAX six-wheeler, Pam and Nic have undertaken some off-road training with Ricky Esser from Follow Me 4WD.  They’ve also successfully crossed the Simpson Desert via the Madigan Line, on a trip with Ricky and six other vehicles in July this year.

Big Red was taken in the D-MAX’s stride with Pam steering it to the top on the first go.

Keep an eye peeled for the mighty six-wheeler in the dunes at Robe and Beachport (South East South Australia) in November this year and the Victorian High Country in January 2017.
