Yul wasn’t interested in being just another off-roader with a Land Cruiser or a Patrol, so when his dad put his low mileage Lux up for sale, Yul grabbed it and set about making it his own.
That as it turns out has been quite an involved process.
The original 1KZTE diesel has just 130,000kms on the clock and Yul has warmed it over with the addition of a Red Dirt Diesel chip, a 3″ exhaust, snorkel and a Turbo Smart boost controller set at 19psi.
Drivetrain mods consist of an ARB front air-locker and a 10″ long-spline front tailshaft.
It’s underneath the Lux where Yul has made the biggest changes, with a DozFab leaf-spring solid axle swap (SAS) replacing the old independent suspension setup.
The swap includes a set of custom folded shock towers, and Yul is running custom valved, remote reservoir Fox shocks.
Rolling stock consists of 35″ BFG KM2 muddies wrapped around 15×8 Walker Evans alloy bead locked rims.
There’s an old ARB steel bull bar protecting the front of the Lux, but Yul is planning to replace that with a DozFab bar in the near future. ARB sidesteps protect the sills and the rear scrub bars form part of the mud guard structure.
The custom steel tray is a ‘Yul Customs’ creation – he built it himself – and features an under-tray tool drawer, two jerry can holders and a swing out tyre carrier. The pièce de résistance is the roof top tent frame that can left at camp while Yul hits the harder tracks.
The Lux has been fitted with a worthy (and long) list of accessories, and it’s a project that Yul admits has given him a solid understanding of this vintage HiLux. It’s also introduced him to “some incredible people”, including a small group of Victorians with sold axle swapped Hiluxes, who he now calls his mates. That’s what 4X4ing is all about right there!
Yul’s local playgrounds include Toolangi, Wesburn and Gembrook and he has a real soft spot for the High Country, in-particular Woods Point on the river.
