Matt’s Lux is the third one we’ve seen this week sporting a solid axle swap. According to Matt it’s “an absolute weapon to drive” and will take on anything it’s pointed at. That’s easy to believe when you see how complete this build is.
It’s relatively easy to ‘turn up the wick’ on a modern diesel and extract some worthwhile gains, and Matt’s done just that, livening up the Lux’s 3.0D4D with a handful of plugin and bolt on gear. It’s currently running a HKS piggyback ECU, a 3″ mandrel bent exhaust, a TJM snorkel and an EGR delete kit. Mixed all together and run up on a dyno, it’s good for 175 rear-wheel horsepower.
The Lux’s original independent front suspension has been replaced with a custom solid axle swap (SAS) using a Toyota 80 Series diff, 4.56 ratio diff gears and an ARB air-locker.
The bulletproofing process has included the addition of RCV chromoly axles and CVs.
The rear diff is fitted with a TJM locker and a rear disc brake conversion, with the handbrake operating a transfer case brake rather than the now defunct rear drums.
Doing their bit to keep the Lux’s panels straight are a custom steel front bull bar, fitted with a Runva 11XP Premium winch and custom Phatbar sliders, while the transfer case is protected by a PSR bash plate.
Wheels are Flatout Racing 16×8 jobbies with steel beadlocks and Matt is currently running 315/75/16 Procomp Extreme muddies.
Fox shocks are a favourite with the HiLux brigade and Matt is using 10″ remote reservoir items at both ends, with 350/375lb Kings coils in the front and 300kg RG Colarado leaf springs in the rear.
The tray is a custom unit and includes two 65-litre tanks, one for fuel and the other for water.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Matt’s Lux is brimming with a range of aftermarket accessories, chosen to make hitting the trails as comfortable and as safe as possible.
Converting the Lux isn’t the easy path to a solid axle 4X4, but for enthusiasts like Matt, it is the only way they can get their hands on a lighter and nimbler solid axle truck with the right badge on the bonnet.
