Aaron’s advice is that it doesn’t matter what you drive, grab your family or mates and get out there to see Australia, because it’s even better than what you see on TV.
Aaron has been doing just that, in fact it’s the reason he bought the GU Patrol. With two daughters, a wife, a camper trailer and a tinny, Aaron needed a 4X4 that could shoulder the load on trips and handle the shopping run in-between.
The Patrol takes it in it’s stride, thanks in part to some sensible modding by Aaron and the previous owner (Aaron’s mate).
The ZD30 has a reputation, but a bit of preventative maintenance goes a long way to ensuring reliability. To this end Aaron has fitted a dawes valve, upgraded to a Forefront Industries turbo and set boost to a moderate 20psi.
A snorkel provides cooler, cleaner air to the K&N air-filter and a 3″ exhaust allows the ZD30 to breathe a little easier.
The bulletproof Patrol drivetrain has been improved further with a matching set of front and rear ARB air-lockers, even stronger chromoly CVs and a set of diff breathers to keep the pumpkins dry on the inside.
Protection comes courtesy of a factory Nissan bull bar and a rear bar with swing away spare wheel carrier. A set of side steps are being made right now, as we hit ‘publish’ on this article.
The GU sits on a 3″ suspension lift and Aaron is currently running 285x75r16 BFG KM2 muddies on 16×8 steel rims.
The list of 12 volt additions is a lengthy one, suffice to say that either Aaron or his mate – maybe both of them – have been busy with the crimpers.
Providing more usable space on those long trips is a custom made set of rear drawers, and there’s a 2.5x3m awning fitted to the full roof cage, because it’s important to keep the sun off the beer on those hot afternoons.
We’ll let Aaron have the last word.
“It’s got it’s dints and marks, but every one of them tells a story…”
