Brent started with a bog stock standard 2005 Lux earlier this year and in just 8 months has turned it into an off-road weapon.
Brent started with a clean slate – a HiLux about as harmless as a HiLux gets (see image below) and set about methodically modifying it to suit his requirements for a tough family tourer and a rugged work ute.
Under the HiLux’s bonnet is Toyota’s ubiquitous 3.0-litre D4D turbo-diesel engine. Brent wasn’t satisfied with the performance on offer and he’s upped the ante with a set of 30-per cent injectors, a full EGR delete and a Diesel Smart power module with four custom tunes. Brent reckons it’s good for a handy 195hp/145kW, with a bunch more torque on offer than the factory tune ever had.
The drivetrain is ‘Toyota tough’ and well able to deal with the upgraded D4D so it’s been left mostly alone. Brent has dropped a couple of ARB air-lockers in for traction purposes, fitted some rear diff, gearbox and transfer case breathers and spruced-up the braking by fitting some slotted rotors.
Dobinsons supplied the suspension, with Brent opting for a set of their trick 3″ remote reservoir MRR front struts and 3″ remote reservoir MRR shocks for the rear. A set of PSR adjustable upper control arms do their bit to make the 3″ lift work.
Wheels are Sunraysia 16 x 8″ steelies and Brent is currently running 285/75/16 Cooper STT muddies. Protecting the Lux is a Rock Armour steel bull bar fitted with a Dominator electric winch.
There’s plenty of LED lighting, including a pair of 7″ LED spotties, 13″ and 23″ LED light bars and two 6″ LED light bars. A 65-litre Waeco fridge is mounted on a drop slide in the tray and it’s all kept humming by two 100 amp batteries controlled by a DCDC charger.
Camping is a cinch, with a roof top tent providing the accommodation and a 3 x 2m awning keeping the sun of Brent’s back at happy hour.
Eight months is all it took!
