Australian pricing and specifications have been announced for the 2017 Mercedes-Benz G-Professional Cab Chassis that is now available to purchase.
Built at the same Magna Steyr manufacturing plant in Austria as the G-Class off-roader, the no-nonsense G-Professional (G-Pro) Cab Chassis is a serious heavy-duty 4X4 workhorse ute with a serious price tag.
But you know what they say about getting what you pay for.
Priced at $119,900, the G-Professional is powered by a Mercedes-Benz 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel engine producing 135kW at 3800rpm and 400Nm from 1600 to 2000 rpm, that powers all four wheels via a five-speed automatic transmission.
That big asking price buys you a huge 2,085kg payload (4,490 kg GVM) without a tray (the price doesn’t include the tray in the pics), a reinforced chassis and suspension that provides 245mm of ground clearance.
Standard features include three differential locks, one in each axle and one in the centre differential – and low-range that can be engaged on the move. Permanent all-wheel-drive with a 50:50 front to rear split is the default drive mode – locking the centre diff turns AWD into 4WD.
A factory fitted snorkel and well thought out design mean that the G-Professional can comfortably run through water up to 650mm deep. The bull bar, headlight and indicator protection seen in the pics is standard, as are radiator and sump bash plates, 16-inch alloy wheels and all-terrain tyres.
The fuel tank has a 96-litre capacity, two 12-volt batteries are fitted, as well as a tyre pressure loss warning system. A spare wheel is supplied (loose) plus two wheel chocks.
The G-Pro boasts an approach angle of 38°, a departure angle of 35° and a break-over point of 22°. It has a recommended towing capacity of 2,210kg (braked) and 750kg (unbraked), and a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 4,490kg (4.49 tonnes).
Inside, the G-Professional there is a hard wearing and practical driving environment with vinyl seat covers, two water-drain plugs in the floor pan, rubber floor mats, storage boxes under both seats, air-conditioning, armrests for both driver and passenger, and a lockable glovebox.
Safety features include Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with selectable on/off function, anti-lock braking system (ABS), Brake Assist (BAS), electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and driver and passenger airbags. Security is taken care of by an electronic immobiliser and central locking.
The G-Professional can be specified with one of two paint finishes (Polar White or Black) or one of four colour finishes, which are a no-cost option (Desert Sand, Deep Orange, Flame Red or Fir Green).
Optional extras include a reinforced walk-on bonnet that will support 100kg and can be painted in a non-slip coating and a cyclonic air filter that is designed to separate dirt and dust from the air before entering the traditional panel air filter.
The asking price might be steep but this is the best equipped factory standard 4X4 available and arguably (it’s a short argument) the most durable.
The new G-Professional is now available to order.
