There aren’t a whole lot of Navara ST-X 550s getting around, but that sweet V6 and seven-speed gearbox were just what the doctor ordered for anyone looking for something more than just another four-cylinder turbo-diesel ute – just ask Dean.
The ‘550’ is indicative of the Navara’s 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel’s torque output in newton metres – yep 550Nm – and that’s what grabbed Dean’s attention, along with the 7-speed auto.
Not that 550Nm was enough mind you. Dean has further boosted the Nav’s outputs with the addition of a Race Chip engine module and a 3″ stainless mandrel bent exhaust system. A set of Acre Racing brake pads help the amped-up Nav stop almost as well as it goes.
Bar work is courtesy of ARB and includes a colour-coded Deluxe bull bar, a set of brush rails and sidesteps. Out the back there’s a Bronco steel tray with tapered tool boxes and LED tail lights.
With touring being the focus, Dean has kept the suspension mods to a practical level and opted for a 2″ medium duty Tough Dog lift kit, with a pair of Tough Dog air-bags helping out in the rear for the larger loads.
Tyres are 275/65/R17 Maxxis Bighorns on 17″ alloy rims.
There’s plenty of LED lighting up front, including three Intensity 180W spotties, a 32″ light bar and a roof mounted 42″ light bar.
Other 12 volt goodies include a GME TX3500 UHF radio and a VMS Touring 700HDX GPS unit.
As you can probably guess, Dean likes the ST-X 550’s grunt and he reckons it’s a bit of a beast off-road, particularly on hills, in mud and on sand – really anywhere that the oodles of torque and smooth shifting drive-train can come into their own.
